In the 1939 version of ‘The 39 Steps’ featuring Kenneth Moore, the tea rooms were centrally featured as a location for part of Richard Hannay’s escape from the police.

Until very recently the tea rooms were run by Csaba & Veronica Brünner, but unfortunately their lease has run out and the owner (adjoining property) wants to sell. A very sad loss as the tea rooms provided an excellent pre or post walk watering stop and the Hungarian goulash was to die for. Progress!?

I understand the Brunners now run a restaurant in nearby Callander. Good luck to a most deserving couple.

Meanwhile, the tea rooms remain desolate and sad.

The area of Glen Finglas and Brig O’Turk is a most important location in the history of British art.

John Ruskin by John Everett Millais

It was here that John Ruskin and his wife Effie lodged with John Everett Millais in mid 19C and where Millais painted the famous portrait of Ruskin, but then subsequently ran off with Ruskin’s wife. Ruskin was a keen advocate that art should return to realistic depictions nature and life – hence his unqualified support

of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (PRB)

Later (1890s – 1910 ish) the location was popular with a group known as ‘The Glasgow Boys’.

Colourists, impressionists, post-impressionists – Glasgow School. Now mainly lost in the ether of time but fashions return, who knows. The name James Guthrie would be most known. The area attracted The Glasgow boys because of its light, atmosphere, nature and remoteness.

The Scottish Trossachs, Callander, and Brig O’Turk are well worth a visit as is of course the nearby lochs, munros, hills and waterways.
